TABITABIYA's handmade designs , keeping with the Japanese tradition, present original items, all made with either new quality Japanese fabrics or vintage kimono, haori jackets or obi belts that I found during my hunts in second-hand kimono shops. Because yes, in Japan, when kimono, haori, obi, etc. can no longer be worn, that's how they find a new life!
This cushion cover is very cheerful with this lively green color! On this vintage obi belt that I upcycled, two patterns from the universe of Yûsokumonyô 有職文様 from the Heian period. Today they designate all patterns that were exclusively worn by members of the Imperial Court in ancient times. We first recognize a geometric pattern from the animal world that we particularly like: Kikkô 亀甲, the scales on the back of the turtle, symbol of good fortune, longevity, knowledge and great wisdom. Here, its polygons bear the name of Kikkô-Tsunagi 亀甲つなぎ. Their geometry and dynamic color give character to the whole. But the effect is softened by the finesse of another animal motif very popular with the Japanese, Kanoko 鹿の子, the white spots on the back of the fawn . In the past, this pattern required great expert labor in the technique of shibori 絞り to be weaved and was once considered as a luxury. But, here, it is simply woven in relief to imitate the shibori effect and bring substance to the fabric. The green of the scales on the back of the turtle are enhanced with a point of golden thread which draws the other yûsoku motif of this obi: Shippô 七宝, a series of intersecting circles symbols of the seven treasures of Buddhism which are gold, silver , lapislazuli, crystal, agate, red pearl and cournelian.
