ONLY ONE CUSHION COVER I STORE!TABITABIYA's handmade designs, in keeping with the Japanese tradition, present original items, all made with either new quality Japanese fabrics or vintage kimono, haori jackets or obi belts that I found during my hunts in second-hand kimono shops. Because yes, in Japan, when kimono, haori, obi, etc. can no longer be worn, that's how they find a new life!
I found very modern this vintage fabric for obi in silver and coral orange lamé that takes up the pattern of Higaki 檜垣 "Cedar wall" (hi=cypress, cedar, gaki=piling the walls), a fence made of thin leaves of Japanese cypress assembled diagonally like a net and often used as a background on kimono and white obi belts before the dyeing stage. It also belongs to the family of auspicious motifs and is a symbol of longevity and a wish for prosperity for the family. Higaki's diagonal rectangles are often a frame to showcase other designs. Here, in another very dynamic geometric movement, the diagonal rectangles are filled with Matsuba 松葉 pine needles that give a lot of modernity. They are also symbols of longevity and resilience. I assembled this fabric for obi with that of another vintage obi in a much stronger tone of coral pink. And to contrast with the geometry of Higaki and Matsuba, this second obi belt is all filled with arabesques enhanced with silver thread. In the end, to give character and add a third color to the whole, a strip of fabric cut from a vintage kimono fabric in a very deep purple blue completes the picture.
